Answer

# How do I add a mouse click sound effect in iMovie or Final Cut Pro?

Download a click sound as a WAV file, drag it into your iMovie or Final Cut Pro timeline under the frame where the click happens, and line it up with the click.

Clacky’s free click sound generator gives you 37 click sounds as WAV files that you may use in any video, commercial ones included. If you haven’t recorded yet, Clacky’s recorder can put real click sounds in the video while you record.

## Get a click sound

- The files are free for your own videos, apps, games and posts, also commercial ones. A credit (“click sound by clacky.app”) is welcome but not required. Please don’t resell them as a sound pack.

1. Open the [click sound generator](https://clacky.app/tools/click-sound-generator/) and tap any sound to hear a full click, the press and the release.
2. To compare two, tap **B**, pick a second sound, then press **A, then B**.
3. Press **Download WAV**. You get a short WAV file (48 kHz, 16-bit, mono, about half a second) that every editor opens.

## Add it in iMovie

1. Open your project and find the moment in the video where the pointer clicks.
2. Drag the WAV file from Finder onto the timeline, just below the video clip, at that moment. It becomes an audio clip attached there.
3. Zoom in on the timeline and slide the audio clip until the start of its waveform sits on the frame where the button goes down.
4. For the next click, select the audio clip, copy it (⌘C), move the playhead to the next click and paste (⌘V).
5. Too loud? Drag the volume line inside the audio clip down until the click sits under your voice.

## Add it in Final Cut Pro

1. Choose **File → Import → Media** (⌘I) and import the WAV into your event.
2. In the timeline, put the playhead on the frame where the click happens. The ← and → keys move one frame at a time.
3. Select the WAV in the browser and press **Q** to connect it to the primary storyline at the playhead.
4. For more clicks, select the connected clip, press ⌘C, move the playhead and press ⌥V (Paste as Connected Clip).
5. Lower the volume by dragging the clip’s volume line, or in the Audio inspector.

## Make the clicks sound real

- Each file holds the press and the release of one click. For a long press or a drag, split the clip and move the release to where the button comes back up.
- Repeating the exact same file can sound mechanical. Download two similar sounds and swap between them, which is roughly what the Clacky app does when it changes pitch a tiny bit on every click.
- Keep the clicks quieter than your voice so they add to the video rather than cover it.

## Or record with the clicks already in

Clacky works live, while you record. It can’t add clicks to a video you already made, so for an existing video use the steps above. For your next recording, Clacky’s screen recorder (macOS 15 or later) records your Mac’s sound, so every real click is in the video with its ripple on screen, and nothing needs lining up afterwards. See [screen recording with click sounds](https://clacky.app/use/screen-recording-with-click-sounds/) and [how to record click sounds](https://clacky.app/record-click-sound/).

## Questions

### Does iMovie have a built-in mouse click sound?

iMovie has a Sound Effects library in its Audio & Video browser. We haven’t checked whether it includes a mouse click, so the WAVs from the click sound generator are a sure option.

### Can I use these click sounds in a monetised YouTube video?

Yes. They’re free to use in your own videos, monetised ones included. A credit is nice but not required.

### Do the WAV files work in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro?

Yes. They’re plain WAV files (48 kHz, 16-bit, mono), which every video editor and audio app opens.

Facts checked on 5 November 2026.
