Answer

# Klack vs Mechvibes: which keyboard sound app is better on a Mac?

Klack is the easier pick on a recent Mac: a $4.99 Mac App Store app for macOS 15 or later that installs and updates like any App Store app. Mechvibes is the pick if you want free and open source, the same app on Windows and Linux, or a big library of community sound packs, and you don’t mind that its Mac version is marked experimental.

Neither one is wrong. They suit different people, and the table below shows where each one is ahead, from each app’s own pages read on 5 November 2026.

## Why pick Klack

Klack, by Henrik Ruscon, is one of the best-known keyboard sound apps for the Mac. Its site shows seven switch sets: CherryMX Japanese Black, Everglide Crystal Purple, Oreo, Flurples Cardboard, Gateron Milky Yellow, Keychron Super Red and NovelKeys Cream. Its App Store description lists separate key down and key up sounds, randomized pitch, spatial audio, tone pad tuning, sleep automation triggers and usage stats.

What holds it back: it needs macOS 15 or later, it is English only, and neither its site nor its listing mentions a free trial.

## Why pick Mechvibes

Mechvibes 3 replaces both the original Mechvibes 2 and MechvibesDX. It ships 10 keyboard packs (Cherry MX, EG and Topre), 4 mouse packs and 10 ambient Mood sounds, and the library at mechvibes.com has many more made by its community, plus an online pack editor. Ctrl+Alt+M mutes everything, up to 32 sounds can overlap, and it has themes.

What holds it back on a Mac: its README calls Mac support experimental, says the maintainer hasn’t tested it on real Mac hardware, and the app isn’t notarized. Community packs install in one click on Windows and Linux, but on a Mac you download the ZIP and add it yourself.

## How to open Mechvibes on a Mac the first time

Still silent? See [Mechvibes not working on Mac](https://clacky.app/blog/mechvibes-not-working-on-mac/).

1. Download the Mac DMG (Apple silicon and Intel) from the Mechvibes GitHub releases page and drag the app to Applications.
2. Right-click the app and choose **Open**. On newer macOS, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click **Open Anyway**.
3. If macOS says the app is damaged, run **xattr -cr /Applications/Mechvibes.app** in Terminal and open it again.
4. Allow **Accessibility** and **Input Monitoring** in System Settings → Privacy & Security, then reopen Mechvibes.

## A third option

If you also want your trackpad and scroll wheel to sound good, with a ripple on every click and a screen recorder, Clacky does that for $4.99 once, on macOS 13 or later, after 3 days free. ## Questions

### Is Mechvibes safe on a Mac?

Its README says it never sends your keystrokes, mouse input or file paths, only an anonymous ping per launch that you can turn off in Settings → Privacy. macOS warns you because the app isn’t notarized, not because of what it does.

### Does Klack work on macOS 14 Sonoma?

No. Its App Store listing says macOS 15.0 or later. Mechvibes or Clacky run on older versions.

### Is Klack free?

No. It costs $4.99 on the Mac App Store, with no in-app purchases listed.

### Is Mechvibes on the Mac App Store?

No. Its README only lists downloads from its GitHub releases page.
