# The best keyboard sound apps for Mac

Updated 29 October 2026

There is no single best keyboard sound app for Mac, but there is a best one for you. Want it free: **Mechvibes** or **Thock**, both open source. Want a well-known paid one: **Klack**, $4.99 on the Mac App Store. Want sounds that react to how hard you type on a newer MacBook: **Haptyk**. Want your mouse, trackpad and scroll wheel to sound good too, with a ripple on every click and a screen recorder: **Clacky**.

Clacky is our app, so every fact about the others below comes from their own website, GitHub page or App Store listing, and each one gets a line on what it does best.

The short version

- **Free:** Mechvibes (Mac, Windows, Linux) and Thock (Mac, open source).
- **Paid, keyboard first:** Klack ($4.99, macOS 15+), Klakk ($4.49 on its site, Mac and Windows), Keeby ($4.99, Mac and Windows), Typemac ($7), Haptyk ($8, newer MacBooks only).
- **Keyboard, mouse and scroll together:** Clacky ($4.99 once, 3-day free trial) and Kiiwi ($4.99 launch price, then $6.99). Clacky also draws a click ripple, records your screen and takes screenshots.
- They all need a permission to see key presses (on a Mac, usually **Input Monitoring**). A good one never records, stores or sends which keys you type.

## Clacky: keyboard, mouse and scroll in one app

Clacky plays **29 keyboard sounds in 9 families** (creamy, marble, poppy, clacky, a typewriter with a bell on Return, quiet library keys and more), **37 click sounds** for the mouse and trackpad, tap to click included, and a soft tick for every scroll notch. The sounds are synthesized, so no two key presses sound exactly alike. Clicks follow your pointer across the screen, and keys sound a little left or right by where they sit on the keyboard. If you want recordings of real switches instead, Thock, Haptyk and Typemac use them.

It also draws a **ripple under the cursor** on every click, has a **screen recorder** that keeps the click sounds in the video (macOS 15+) and a **screenshot editor** (macOS 14+). Clackyland, a little harbour town that grows as you click, is there if you want it. $4.99 once for 1 Mac, after a 3-day free trial with no card. **Best for:** people who want the keyboard, the mouse and the trackpad to all sound good, and anyone recording their screen.

## Klack

Klack is one of the best-known keyboard sound apps for the Mac. It costs $4.99 on the Mac App Store, plays separate key down and key up sounds with a little pitch variation and spatial audio, and has played mouse clicks since early 2025. It needs macOS 15 or later.

**Best for:** a polished, keyboard-first app from the App Store. [Clacky vs Klack](https://clacky.app/vs/klack/).

## Mechvibes

Mechvibes is a free, open-source (MIT) keyboard sound app for Mac, Windows and Linux, with community-made sound packs. On recent macOS some people report it staying silent, and its maker now points to a rewrite, MechvibesDX, which is marked experimental on the Mac. If it stays silent for you, see [Mechvibes not working on Mac](https://clacky.app/blog/mechvibes-not-working-on-mac/).

**Best for:** free, and the same app on every computer you own. [Clacky vs Mechvibes](https://clacky.app/vs/mechvibes/).

## Thock

Thock is a free, open-source (MIT) Mac menu-bar app for keyboard sounds. It plays recorded sound packs or your own, has played mouse clicks since version 1.19, does spatial audio, goes quiet while Apple Music, Spotify or VLC plays, and can be driven from Raycast or the command line. It needs macOS 13.5 or later.

**Best for:** a free, native Mac app you can tinker with. [Clacky vs Thock](https://clacky.app/vs/thock/).

## Haptyk

Haptyk reads how hard you hit each key from the MacBook’s motion sensor and picks from 16 recorded packs to match: soft typing sounds soft. $8 once, a 3-day trial with an email, and a 14-day refund. It only runs on Apple silicon MacBooks with that sensor: not on desktop Macs, Intel Macs, the M1 MacBook Air or the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro.

**Best for:** a newer MacBook, and sounds that react to how hard you type. [Clacky vs Haptyk](https://clacky.app/vs/haptyk/).

## Klakk

Klakk is a keyboard sound app for Mac and Windows with 14 switch sound packs and 11 languages. It costs $4.49 once on its own website, or an in-app unlock on the Mac App Store, after a 3-day trial. It needs macOS 14 or later.

**Best for:** one keyboard sound app on both a Mac and a Windows PC. [Clacky vs Klakk](https://clacky.app/vs/klakk/).

## Typemac

Typemac is a Mac app with three real keyboards recorded key by key, so Space sounds different from Enter. It costs $7 once and runs on macOS 13 or later, Apple silicon and Intel.

**Best for:** real recordings of a few keyboards, kept simple.

## Keeby

Keeby is a $4.99 keyboard sound app for Mac and Windows, sold on the Mac App Store and its own website, and it plays left, right and middle mouse clicks.

**Best for:** keyboard sounds plus mouse clicks on a Mac and a PC. [Clacky vs Keeby](https://clacky.app/vs/keeby/).

## Kiiwi

Kiiwi plays keyboard, mouse and scroll sounds, with 30+ switch packs and a 3-day free trial, at $4.99 for its first 100 buyers and $6.99 after. It needs macOS 14 or later.

**Best for:** keyboard, mouse and scroll sounds in one simple app, with one licence for 2 Macs. [Clacky vs Kiiwi](https://clacky.app/vs/kiiwi/).

## How to choose

1. **Free or paid?** Free: Mechvibes or Thock. The paid ones cost $4.49 to $8, paid once.
2. **Which Mac?** Klack needs macOS 15, Klakk and Kiiwi macOS 14, Haptyk a newer Apple silicon MacBook. Clacky and Typemac run from macOS 13, Thock from 13.5.
3. **Just the keyboard, or everything?** If you click and scroll all day too, pick one that plays the mouse and trackpad (Clacky and Kiiwi play scroll sounds too). Of these apps, Clacky is the only one whose own page lists a click ripple and a screen recorder that keeps the sounds in the video.
4. **Hear it first.** Most of these apps have a demo on their website. Every Clacky sound plays on [clacky.app](https://clacky.app/) and in the [typing test](https://clacky.app/typing-test/) before you install anything.

## Are keyboard sound apps safe?

They all need a permission that lets them see key presses, on a Mac usually **Input Monitoring**. Pick one that says it never records, stores or sends what you type, works offline and goes quiet in password fields. Clacky’s rule: keyboard sounds listen for key down/up only. Clacky never records, stores or sends which keys you type, and respects Secure Input. More in [how keyboard sound apps work on a Mac](https://clacky.app/mac-keyboard-sounds/).

## Questions

### What is the best free keyboard sound app for Mac?

Mechvibes is free and open source, for Mac, Windows and Linux, with community sound packs. Thock is an open-source native Mac app (MIT) with recorded packs and mouse clicks. Both install from their GitHub pages.

### Is Klack free?

No. Klack costs $4.99 on the Mac App Store and needs macOS 15 or later. Its listing doesn’t mention a free trial.

### Which keyboard sound apps also play mouse clicks?

Clacky, Klack, Thock (since 1.19), Keeby and Kiiwi play mouse clicks too. Clacky also plays trackpad taps and scroll ticks and draws a ripple on every click.

### Do keyboard sound apps work on an iMac, a Mac mini or an Intel Mac?

Most work on desktop Macs. Haptyk is the exception: it needs an Apple silicon MacBook with a motion sensor. For an Intel Mac, check each app’s page (Clacky, Typemac and Kiiwi say they run on Intel). Klack needs macOS 15, Klakk and Kiiwi macOS 14, and Clacky macOS 13 or later.

### Do keyboard sound apps record what I type?

They can see key presses, so check each app’s privacy policy for a plain promise that it never records, stores or sends them. Clacky: keyboard sounds listen for key down/up only. Clacky never records, stores or sends which keys you type, and respects Secure Input.

### Which keyboard sound apps work on Windows too?
