Can my Mac make a sound when I click?
Updated 11 October 2026
Short answer: no, macOS has no setting that plays a sound when you click a mouse or trackpad; you need a small app that hears each click and plays one.
Your Mac has sounds for alerts and screenshots, but not for clicks. Tap to click is silent, and on a Force Touch trackpad the click you feel is a haptic tap. Here’s how to add a sound, and what the app needs to do it.
The short version
- System Settings has no click sound option for a mouse or trackpad.
- A click sound app needs Input Monitoring (System Settings → Privacy & Security) to hear your clicks.
- A good one only turns those events into sounds, and never records or sends what you do.
- Clacky has 37 click sounds in 8 families, plus a soft tick when you scroll. Hear them all.
The permission, honestly
To play a sound on every click, an app has to know that a click happened, in every app. macOS asks you to allow that under Input Monitoring. The permission is broad: it also lets an app see key presses. So trust comes from what the app does with it.
Clacky listens for clicks, scrolling and key presses only to play sounds (key presses only when keyboard sounds are on). It never records, stores, logs or sends which keys you type, and never captures text. In password fields macOS turns on Secure Input, and Clacky stays silent. You can switch the permission off any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring. More in keyboard and click sounds on Mac.

Add a click sound with Clacky
- Get Clacky at clacky.app and open it. It lives in the menu bar.
- Follow the welcome tour and allow Input Monitoring when macOS asks.
- Click: you hear a press and a release. Tap to click makes a sound too.
- Pick a sound in the menu (Sound) or in Settings. There are 37 in 8 families: hear them on the sounds page.
- Optional: turn on a tick for each scroll notch, or keyboard sounds.
No sound?
- Check that Clacky is on in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Input Monitoring.
- Quit and reopen Clacky. macOS often applies the permission only after a restart of the app.
- Check the volume and the output (speakers or headphones), and that Clacky is switched on in its menu.
Questions
Can tap to click make a sound?
Yes, with an app. Clacky plays a click for every press, including tap to click, which is normally silent on a Mac.
Will the click sound be in my screen recordings?
Only if your recorder records the Mac’s audio. Clacky’s own recorder (macOS 15 or later) always includes it. See how to record click sounds.
Does Clacky know what I type?
No. It never records, stores, logs or sends which keys you type and never captures text. Key presses only become sounds, and password fields stay silent.
