Answer

Can I use Clacky without Clackyland?

Yes. Clackyland is one place in the Clacky window that you open when you want to, and click sounds, keyboard sounds, ripples, the screen recorder and screenshots all work the same if you never visit it.

Clacky Core has no nudges: no reminder pop-ups, no streak nags and no level-up pop-ups. The few small Clackyland touches outside it, like your Blip beside the notch, each have their own switch.

Where Clackyland lives, and where it doesn't

Clacky is a menu-bar app. Its window has four places on a small switcher at the top: My Kit, Sounds, Studio and Clackyland, with Settings behind the gear. Clackyland, the little harbour town with your Blip, the Cookie Factory and Boop's Bazaar, only shows when you click it there or on its card in My Kit.

Nothing in Clackyland is needed for the rest of Clacky. You don't have to collect cookies, keep a streak or level up to use any sound or tool, and levels can never be bought.

Turn off the small Clackyland touches

If you want Clacky to feel like a plain sound app, these switches remove every Clackyland bit you would see outside it:

What you seeWhere to turn it off
Your Blip beside the notchSettings → Boop → Blip beside the notch
Boop or your Blip in the notchSettings → Notch → Beside the notch → Nothing
Your Blip in alerts from the notchSettings → Boop → Show my Blip in alerts
Your Blip anywhere in the appSettings → Boop → Show my blip (off shows plain Boop)
Birds and breeze sounds in ClackylandSettings → Appearance → Clackyland ambient
Clacky's own small app soundsSettings → Appearance → Interface sounds

Make Clacky a plain sound app, step by step

Turning off Show my blip keeps your Blip, its level and its streak. Turn it back on any time and everything is where you left it.

  1. Open Clacky's Settings (⌘, from its menu) and go to Boop.
  2. Turn off Blip beside the notch and Show my Blip in alerts. Turn off Show my blip too if you want plain Boop everywhere.
  3. Go to Notch and set Beside the notch to Nothing.
  4. Go to Appearance and turn off Clackyland ambient.
  5. Open My Kit when you want sounds, ripples, the recorder or screenshots. Leave the Clackyland place closed.

Why Clackyland is there at all

Some people like a small reward for a day of making things: your clicks bake cookies, cookies buy looks for your Blip, and the harbour's buildings grow on the days you use Clacky. Others just want soft clicks. Clacky is built for both, which is why Clackyland waits in its own place instead of popping up. Everything it counts, it counts on your Mac.

Either way, the price is the same: $4.99 once, for 1 Mac, after a 3-day free trial with no card.

Questions

Does Clackyland send me reminders to come back?

No. Clacky Core has no nudges: no reminder pop-ups, no streak nags, no level-up pop-ups.

Does Clackyland slow down my Mac when I'm not in it?

In our own check Clacky as a whole used about 1 to 3% of one CPU core in the background. Since 2.7.16 the harbour also lets go of its memory when you close it. We have not measured battery life.

Is there a cheaper version of Clacky without Clackyland?

No. There is one Clacky, $4.99 once, with every part included.

Do my clicks still bake cookies if I never open Clackyland?

Yes, Boop still bakes a batch every day, and up to 3 days of batches wait in the oven. Nothing happens to them if you never collect.
