Answer
Why do keyboard sounds lag with Bluetooth headphones?
Bluetooth headphones and speakers add a delay to every sound your Mac plays, so a typing sound arrives a moment after your finger hits the key. The delay is in the Bluetooth audio link, for every app, and no keyboard sound app can take it away.
We haven’t measured Clacky’s latency in milliseconds, so we won’t give you a number. What works is playing the sounds through the built-in speakers or wired headphones.
Why Bluetooth adds a delay
To send sound over Bluetooth, your Mac compresses it and sends it in small packets, and the headphones hold a little in reserve so the sound doesn’t drop out. All of that takes time. You don’t notice it with music, because nothing you do has to line up with the music. A typing sound has to line up with your finger, so even a short delay feels wrong.
Clacky tells you about it too. When your Mac plays through Bluetooth, its keyboard settings show a note: “Bluetooth adds delay. Built-in speakers or wired sound are best.”
Fixes that work
- Play through the built-in speakers: open Control Center → Sound and pick your Mac’s speakers, or use System Settings → Sound → Output.
- Use wired headphones in the headphone jack, or USB or USB-C headphones. Clacky’s Only with headphones counts wired headphones as headphones too.
- Keep music in your AirPods and Clacky on the speakers: pick the speakers under Output in Clacky’s settings. Clacky uses that output while it’s connected, and the rest of your Mac keeps its own.
- Type a few words after each change. If the delay is gone on the speakers, Bluetooth was the cause.
What won’t fix it
- Restarting Clacky, changing its volume or picking another sound.
- Switching to another keyboard sound app. Every app’s sound goes through the same Bluetooth link.
- A different Bluetooth keyboard. The keyboard also talks to your Mac over radio, but the delay you hear comes from the audio side.
Calls and AirPods
More on where sounds play in sounds only in headphones.
- When a call starts, AirPods switch to a headset mode for the microphone, and the sound changes. Quiet during calls (on by default) keeps Clacky silent during calls anyway.
- Since Clacky 2.7.15, sounds follow AirPods when you take them out and put them back in, with no restart.
