Answer
Does Clacky count my clicks and key presses?
Yes. Clacky counts how many clicks, scrolls and key presses you make and keeps those counts in files on your Mac for its Stats and for Clackyland, but it never stores which keys you press or what you type.
The counts leave your Mac only if you turn on anonymous usage stats, and then only as one daily total each for clicks, scrolls and key presses. You can switch that off in Settings → Share anonymous usage stats.
What Clacky counts, and where it keeps it
Two small files in your own Library hold the counts. Nothing else about your clicks or typing is kept.
| Counts | What is in them | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | Per day: clicks, double-clicks, scroll notches and drags, clicks per hour, which app was in front (its app ID) and which sound played | ~/Library/Application Support/Clacky/stats.json |
| Recordings | Length, full screen or area, microphone on or off, clicks during it | The same stats.json |
| Typing | Per day: how many key presses, presses per hour, your best minute and time spent typing | ~/Library/Application Support/Clacky/typing.json |
What is never counted
The typing file gets only one signal: a key went down now. No key codes, no characters, no apps and no kinds of key go into it.
- Which keys you press, or any letters or words.
- Where the pointer was when you clicked.
- Window titles, or anything on your screen.
- Keys typed while Secure Input is on, like in password fields.
When counting happens
Clicks are counted only while Clacky is on and activated (your trial or your licence). Typing is counted only while keyboard sounds are on, and never during Secure Input. Turn Clacky off with the switch in the menu bar and nothing is counted.
The counts feed Settings → Stats (today, your streak, your busiest hours) and Clackyland, where using Clacky adds a few cookies. Share cards are made only when you choose to make one.
What can leave your Mac
By default, none of the detail above. Only these, and only if you choose them:
- Anonymous usage stats (you say yes first): daily totals of clicks, scrolls and key presses, one number each, never which keys. Yesterday’s click and scroll totals also add to a public total on clacky.app.
- Friends (off until you turn it on): your Blip’s card with its level, streak and badges. Weekly leaderboards for clicks, streak and cookies show you only if you join them.
- The daily check-in carries no counts at all. See what Clacky sends online.
How to clear the counts
Quit Clacky, then in Finder choose Go → Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Application Support/Clacky and delete stats.json and typing.json. Clacky starts fresh counts the next time it opens. To remove everything Clacky keeps, see how to uninstall Clacky completely.
