Answer
Why isn’t Clacky on the Mac App Store?
Clacky is sold directly at clacky.app instead of on the Mac App Store: you download it from the website, pay once through Polar, and it updates itself inside the app.
Selling direct doesn’t skip Apple’s checks. Clacky is signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so macOS opens it like any trusted download.
What buying direct means for you
Here is how Clacky works next to a typical Mac App Store app.
| Clacky, sold direct | A Mac App Store app | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you get it | clacky.app | The App Store app |
| How you pay | Polar's checkout, $4.99 once | Your Apple ID |
| Free trial | 3 days in the app, no card, no account | Depends on the app |
| Updates | Inside Clacky, every update included | Through the App Store |
| Refunds | Email hello@clacky.app within 7 days (14 where your local law gives longer) | Through Apple |
| Apple's check | Developer ID signature and notarization | App Review |
How macOS checks a direct download
Notarization means Apple scanned this exact build of Clacky for known malicious code. The first time you open it, macOS asks if you want to open an app downloaded from the internet, the same question it asks for any notarized download.
If macOS ever refuses to open Clacky, the copy may be damaged or from somewhere else. Delete it and download it again from clacky.app.
How updates reach you
Updates download in the background and install when you’ve been away and nothing is recording, shared or in a call. Clacky only installs an update signed with its own key, so a file from anywhere else is refused. You can also choose Check for Updates… in the menu-bar menu, or switch off Automatic updates in Settings.
Every update is included in the one-time price. See how Clacky updates.
If you would rather buy through Apple
