Answer
Does Clacky work on a Mac mini, iMac or Mac Studio?
Yes. Clacky works on a Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio or Mac Pro the same way it works on a MacBook, with any mouse, trackpad or keyboard you plug in or pair.
It doesn’t need a built-in trackpad or a motion sensor. It plays a sound for the clicks, scrolls and key presses macOS reports, whatever device they come from, on macOS 13 Ventura or later.
What you get on a desktop Mac
- Click sounds for every press and release of any mouse or trackpad, a Magic Trackpad’s tap to click included. Extra mouse buttons play too, with their own ripple colour.
- Keyboard sounds for any keyboard macOS sees, USB or Bluetooth. See external keyboards.
- Scroll ticks: one per notch on a classic wheel, and one per stretch of smooth scrolling on a Magic Mouse or trackpad.
- A ripple on every display. Each screen gets its own ripple layer, and it’s rebuilt when you plug in or rearrange displays.
- A notch where there is none. External displays have no notch, so Clacky draws one. You pick the screens that show it: the main one, all of them or the ones you choose.
Getting the sound out of a desktop Mac
Clacky plays through whatever your Mac plays through: the built-in speakers, a display’s speakers, USB speakers or headphones. To send Clacky somewhere else than the rest of your Mac, pick a device under Output in Clacky’s settings. Clacky keeps using it while it’s connected.
| Your audio | Does Only with headphones count it as headphones? |
|---|---|
| AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones | Yes |
| Headphones in the headphone jack | Yes |
| USB headphones or a headset named like one | Yes |
| A Bluetooth speaker, HomePod, Sonos or soundbar | No, it counts as a speaker |
| A USB audio interface with another name | No. Pick it under Output instead |
Apps that need a MacBook
Some keyboard sound apps play softer or harder sounds by how hard you hit the key, which they read from a MacBook’s motion sensor. Haptyk says it runs only on newer Apple silicon MacBooks and not on desktop Macs. Clank Keys also reads the MacBook’s motion sensor, so check its page before you try it on a desktop Mac.
Clacky doesn’t use the motion sensor, so it works on every desktop Mac that runs macOS 13 or later. The trade-off is that its sounds don’t react to how hard you type. If that’s what you want and you have a newer MacBook, Haptyk does it well. See Clacky vs Haptyk.
