Answer

Clacky vs Kachunk: which one should you get?

Pick Kachunk if you want recorded typewriter and switch sounds, want to start free, and want an app that says it works fully offline with no telemetry. Pick Clacky if you also want sounds for your mouse, trackpad and scroll wheel, a ripple on every click and a screen recorder.

They cost the same to buy outright. Kachunk is free with 2 packs and $4.99 once for all 26. Clacky is $4.99 once for 1 Mac, after 3 days free with no card.

Pick Kachunk if…

Kachunk’s packs are recordings, with up to 12 strike recordings per pack plus release and tail sounds, and their own Space and Backspace sounds. Each key press varies a little in pitch and loudness, up to 3 semitones either way. The typewriters have a return bell and a carriage slide you can switch off.

  • You love typewriters: two real ones, recorded.
  • You want to start free and pay only for more packs. The free tier is the Underwood 1938 and the Cream switch pack.
  • You want an app that stays offline and sends nothing.
  • You’d rather buy from the Mac App Store, or want one purchase for every Mac you own.

Pick Clacky if…

Clacky gives your whole desk a sound: 37 click sounds for the mouse and trackpad (tap to click included), a soft tick for every scroll notch, and 29 keyboard sounds, among them a Typewriter family with a bell on Return. Clicks follow your pointer across the speakers, and keys sound a little left or right by where they sit.

Keyboard sounds listen for key down/up only. Clacky never records, stores or sends which keys you type, and respects Secure Input.

  • You want clicks and scrolling to sound good, not only typing.
  • You make tutorials or demos: the ripple and the recorder keep your clicks visible and audible in the video.
  • You want sounds only in your headphones, with Only with headphones.

Use them together

You can run both. Turn off the Keyboard Sounds tile in Clacky’s My Kit, and Clacky keeps playing your clicks and scroll ticks while the other app plays your keys.

Kachunk’s ⌃⌥M mutes its sounds, and one switch in Clacky’s menu bar turns Clacky off, so you can silence both in a second before a meeting.

Questions

Is Kachunk really free?

Yes, with two packs: the Underwood 1938 typewriter and the Cream switch pack. A one-time $4.99 buys all 26 and future packs.

Does Kachunk work on older Macs?

Its page says macOS 13 or later, the same as Clacky. It doesn’t say whether it runs on Intel and Apple silicon.

Which one has the better typewriter?

If you want a recording of a real typewriter, Kachunk. Clacky’s Typewriter sounds are synthesized, with a bell on Return.

Does Kachunk play mouse clicks?

Its page doesn’t mention mouse sounds. Clacky plays every press and release of the mouse and trackpad.
