Answer
Can I pause a screen recording on a Mac?
Not with the tools built into macOS: the Screenshot toolbar (Shift-Command-5) and QuickTime Player’s screen recording have a Stop button but no Pause, so you get a new file each time you stop.
You can join those files afterwards in QuickTime Player, or use a recorder that pauses. Clacky’s Screen Recorder (macOS 15 or later) pauses and resumes into one file.

Join two recordings in QuickTime Player
If you stopped instead of pausing, this puts the takes back together without another app.
- Open the first recording in QuickTime Player.
- Choose Edit → Add Clip to End and pick the second recording. QuickTime shows both as clips in a row.
- Drag the clips to change their order, and choose Edit → Trim on a clip to cut its start or end.
- Click Done, then choose File → Export As and pick a size. The joined video is a new file.
Pause and resume with Clacky
In Clacky’s recorder you can pause from three places: the recording pill (Pause, then Resume), the notch at the top of the screen, or Clacky’s menu-bar menu (Pause Recording, which turns into Resume Recording). Clacky draws a notch on screens that don’t have one.
Resume and it carries on in the same file. When you stop, there is one recording in Movies › Clacky, with no gap and nothing to join. The pill and the notch controls are never in the video.
Pause or cut later?
For short waits, keep recording and cut later: Clacky’s Auto edit (Beta) speeds up the waiting and cuts the quiet between sentences, and you can click any cut to bring it back.
| Pause while recording | Cut the wait afterwards | |
|---|---|---|
| Good for | Long setups, a phone call, getting a file ready | Short waits, a page loading |
| Built-in tools | No | QuickTime: split and delete clips |
| Clacky | Pause and Resume, one file | Auto edit speeds up waiting and cuts quiet |
