Keyboard tester
Press every key on your keyboard. Each one lights up while it’s down and turns green once it worked, so a dead, stuck or double-typing key shows up in seconds.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type, click, film or say is uploaded or saved.
It runs right here, on the little Mac. Drag the window, open other apps from the Dock.
How to test your keyboard
- Click the keyboard window (or this page) so it has focus.
- Press each key once. Pressed keys light up, tested keys stay green.
- A key that never turns green isn’t reaching your Mac. A key that stays lit after you let go is stuck.
What the numbers mean
- Key is the character the key types in your layout (for example
aorß). - Code is the physical key (
KeyA), the same in every layout. - Left / right tells the two ⇧, ⌥ and ⌘ keys apart.
Mac quirks
- fn (🌐) never reaches a web page, so it stays grey.
- While ⌘ is held, macOS doesn’t report other keys being let go; release ⌘ and they clear.
- Caps Lock reports once when it turns on and once when it turns off.
Questions
How do I test a keyboard online?
Open this page, click it once and press every key. Keys turn green after they work. Any key that stays grey isn’t sending anything.
Why doesn’t the fn or Globe key light up?
macOS keeps fn (🌐) to itself: no web page can see it. Test it in macOS instead, for example fn + F1 to change brightness.
One key types twice. Is my keyboard broken?
Often it’s dust under a switch or a worn switch. Try compressed air first. If you have a MacBook with a butterfly keyboard (2015–2019), Apple ran a free repair program for it.
Does this tester record what I type?
No. It only shows which key is pressed, right here. Nothing is saved or sent.
