What is my screen resolution?

Your screen’s resolution, as your browser sees it: the size in points (what macOS calls “looks like”), the real number of pixels, the Retina scale, your browser window and the refresh rate.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type, click, film or say is uploaded or saved.

Points and pixels on a Mac

A Retina Mac draws every point with 2 × 2 (or more) real pixels. So a MacBook Air that “looks like” 1470 × 956 has 2940 × 1912 pixels behind it. The Retina scale (device pixel ratio) is that multiplier.

What each line means

  • Looks like: the screen size in points, the setting in System Settings → Displays.
  • Real pixels: points × scale, what screenshots and screen recordings capture.
  • Browser window: the part of the page you can see right now.
  • Refresh rate: measured from the browser’s animation frames (ProMotion Macs show up to 120 Hz).

Change your display scaling in System Settings → Displays, then reload this page to see the new numbers.

Questions

How do I find my screen resolution on a Mac?

This page shows it at once. In macOS: Apple menu → About This Mac → More Info → Displays, or System Settings → Displays.

Why is my resolution half of what Apple says?

Your browser reports points, not pixels. On a Retina screen each point is 2 × 2 pixels; the Real pixels line shows the full number.

Is the refresh rate exact?

It’s measured from the browser’s frame timing and rounded to a common rate, so it’s a good estimate. Low Power Mode can lower it.
