Microphone test
Check your microphone before a call or a recording: watch the level and waveform move as you speak, record five seconds and listen back. The sound stays on this page.
Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type, click, film or say is uploaded or saved.
It runs right here, on the little Mac. Drag the window, open other apps from the Dock.
How to test your microphone
- Press Start mic and allow access when your browser asks.
- Speak or clap: the bar and the line should move, and the page says your mic works.
- Press Record 5 seconds, then play it back to hear how you sound.
Reading the level
Peak is the loudest moment in dBFS: 0 is the maximum. Normal speech peaks around −20 to −6. Peaks at 0 mean you’re clipping: move back or lower the input level.
If it doesn’t work
- Allow the mic in the address bar and in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
- Pick the right input from the list (AirPods, a USB mic…).
- Check the input level in System Settings → Sound → Input.
Questions
Is this mic test private?
Yes. The sound is analysed in your browser and your 5-second clip lives only in this tab. Nothing is uploaded or saved.
Why is my mic so quiet on Mac?
Open System Settings → Sound → Input, pick your mic and raise the input volume. Some USB mics also have a gain knob.
Which mic is my Mac using?
Start the test: it shows the mic’s name and lets you switch between every input your Mac sees.
